Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 17, 2026

1. Introduction

SOLace ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how SOLace collects, uses, and discloses information when you use our educational testing platform. SOLace complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), including the amended COPPA Rule that took effect April 22, 2026.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information Collection by Age Group

Our information collection practices apply the same protections to all users regardless of age, because our platform collects no personally identifying information from anyone under any circumstances.

2.2 Information We Do Not Collect

We do NOT collect any personally identifying information from any user, including:

2.3 Anonymous Performance Data

SOLace collects anonymous performance data from completed test attempts to support platform improvement and educational research. This data contains no personally identifying information. The specific fields collected are:

Each test attempt is tagged with a random session identifier generated by the student's browser at the start of the test. The identifier exists only in the browser's memory during the test session and is discarded when the tab is closed. We do not store cookies, account information, device fingerprints, or any other persistent identifier that could link test attempts to individual users, sessions, or devices. We do not store IP addresses with this data.

Because no persistent identifier connects one attempt to another, a student who takes multiple tests produces multiple unlinked records from our perspective. This architecture prevents any reconstruction of an individual student's history even from within our own database.

3. How We Use Information

We use the anonymous performance data described in Section 2.3 to:

Although your activity contributes to our larger pool of anonymous data, no identifiable information is associated with your device, session, or visit at any point.

4. How We Share Information

We may share information in the following circumstances:

4.1 Service Providers

We share only the information you voluntarily provide to us with third-party service providers who perform services on our behalf such as email delivery. Our database provider (currently Neon, a serverless Postgres service) hosts the anonymous performance data described in Section 2.3 on secure, access-controlled infrastructure. Our database provider operates under its own privacy and security obligations and does not use the data for any purpose other than providing storage services to us.

4.2 Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.

4.3 Academic Research Partners

We may share anonymous, aggregate performance data with qualified academic researchers at accredited educational institutions. Any such sharing takes place under formal data-sharing agreements that limit use to the stated research purpose, prohibit attempts at re-identification, and prohibit onward disclosure. Because no personally identifying information exists in the data at any stage, such sharing does not involve the transfer of personal information as defined by COPPA. Where appropriate, research projects using this data receive prior review by the partner institution's Institutional Review Board (IRB).

5. Data Retention

SOLace does not retain personal information from any user, because such information is not collected other than voluntary contact information from users over 13 as noted above.

Anonymous performance data described in Section 2.3 is retained for up to 24 months from the date of collection. After this period, records are automatically deleted from our database. This retention window reflects the time needed to support meaningful longitudinal analysis while limiting the data footprint in line with COPPA's data minimization principles.

Any educational progress or scores displayed back to a student on their own device are stored locally in that browser and are independent of the anonymous data sent to our servers. Clearing browser storage removes the student's local history without affecting the anonymous data already collected, and vice versa.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We do not use cookies or similar tracking technologies to collect personal information from users of any age. Any local storage used by SOLace is strictly functional (such as maintaining accessibility preferences or a student's own history of prior test scores on their own device) and does not collect or transmit personal information to our servers.

6.1 Parental Control

Parents can control local storage settings in their child's browser to further limit any local data retention.

7. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

SOLace is designed as an educational platform suitable for users of all ages, including children under 13. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the amended COPPA Rule effective April 22, 2026.

7.1 Information Collection from Children Under 13

We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information from children under the age of 13 without verifiable parental consent. Our practices for users under 13 include:

7.2 Third-Party Data Collection

SOLace contains links to third-party websites. Websites that are COPPA-compliant and safe for users under 13 to access, such as Desmos, are available for all users through our site by default. Clicking a third-party link to a website designed for users over 13, such as GitHub, triggers a browser confirmation asking the user to confirm they are over 13 and wish to access the website. SOLace is not responsible for any privacy violations that occur within third-party websites we link to.

7.3 Parental Rights

Parents and legal guardians of children under 13 have the right to:

Because we do not collect personal information and our anonymous performance data contains no linkable identifier, we cannot selectively locate or delete records associated with a particular child. Parents concerned about the anonymous data collection can prevent it entirely by closing the browser tab before a test completes, as the data is transmitted only upon completion.

7.4 Parental Consent

If we ever change our practices to collect personal information from children under 13, we commit to obtaining verifiable parental consent before collecting any such information, as required by COPPA.

7.5 Contact for Child Privacy Concerns

If you are a parent or guardian and have concerns about your child's privacy or believe your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us immediately at support@learnsolace.org with "Child Privacy" in the subject line.

8. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and maintained on servers located outside of your jurisdiction where privacy laws may differ. By using our Service, you consent to such transfers. Because no personally identifying information is collected or transferred, the privacy implications of any such transfer are minimal.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We notify users of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date at the top. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Material changes to our data collection practices take effect only after the updated policy is posted.
